Computer chip design on the ‘edge’ of breakthrough
Professionals in IT sales jobs should be aware the design of computer chips could be about to change as researchers from the University of Manchester have developed another material that can be applied to its makeup.
Nobel laureates Andre Geim and Professor Konstantin Novosolev saw their paper published in Science this week, following their discovery that graphene could be used to create computer chips.
The material is one atomic plane of carbon, which has previously been unsuccessful for the manufacturing of computer chips due to its positioning.
In previous studies, scientists laid graphene in a horizontal direction that led to it melting the computer chip within a fraction of a second.
However, the Manchester-based research team discovered that by laying it vertically, they could maximise graphene’s unique function without the same disappointing effects witnessed in previous studies.
The function particular to graphene is that its external voltage can alter the energy of tunnelling electronics, so that the team were able to create a tunnelling transistor.
Spearhead of the experiment, Dr Leonid Ponomarechenko, said: “It is a new vista for graphene research and chances for graphene-based electronics never looked better than they are now.”
