Could more firms lead to greater business services sales?

There has been an increase in the number of businesses created from the start of 2010, which could lead to greater opportunities for people in business services sales jobs.

Figures from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills show that at the start of 2010 there were 48,000 new businesses compared to 2009.

In total, there were around 4.5 million private sector enterprises in the UK last year with an annual turnover of £3.2 billion collectively.

Business and enterprise minister Mark Prisk said the statistics show the resilience of British business during a tough financial year.

"I am determined that the government will do everything it can to create the right environment for these businesses to now expand and grow, and also to encourage more people to set up on their own," he added.

Details of the latest Business Population Estimates report also reveal that 64 per cent of private sector firms were sole proprietorships, while 28 per cent were companies and eight per cent were partnerships.

Small and medium-sized enterprises accounted for 99.9 per cent of all UK businesses.
