Economy to improve in 2012, CBI says
Executives in construction sales jobs will be encouraged to learn the UK economy is expected to improve in 2012, it was suggested today (February 13th).
According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), the economy will grow 0.2 per cent in the first three months of the year, with 0.9 per cent growth due to be enjoyed by the end of 2012.
This is despite a poor conclusion to 2011, when the economy contracted 0.2 per cent in the last quarter.
The CBI believes the UK can avoid a double-dip recession, however, progress relies heavily on how conditions in the eurozone pan out.
CBI director general John Cridland said: “Economic conditions will continue to be tough, especially in the first half of the year and UK recovery will depend on the successful resolution of the eurozone crisis.”
In a separate statement, the employers’ organisation singled out the construction sector as key to economic growth, with the government aiming to make 20 per cent savings on construction projects over the next three years.
CBI director of business environment and construction Rhian Kelly said: “Bringing down the cost of publicly-procured construction projects … will help us see more benefits in terms of jobs and growth.”
