Employees respond ‘positively’ to flexible working hours

The benefits of flexible working hours may be having an impact on professionals in technical sales jobs as employees enjoy the freedom they offer, an expert has suggested.

Executives have the opportunity to switch between work and non-work activities during the typical nine to five day in a move they generally appreciate, believes Dr Clare Kelliher, senior lecturer in strategic human resource management at Cranfield School of Management.

She said: “Many employees are grateful to have the opportunity to be able to intersperse work and non-work activity.

“People can intersperse home activities with work, perhaps picking up work later in the evening after they’ve been involved in caring or that kind of thing.”

However, the expert noted there were instances when the employee could become overloaded with work, which was a negative side effect of flexible hours.

The flexibility allows executives to put in extra hours during busy periods, while enabling them to take it more easy when work pressures are not so heavy.

Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that managers work an average 7.6 hours extra a week for no pay.
