Manufacturing industry enjoys strong start to 2012

Professionals in manufacturing sales jobs will be encouraged to learn the sector has begun the new year with positive results, figures released yesterday (February 1st) suggested.

The seasonally adjusted Markit/CIPS UK manufacturing purchasing mangers’ index climbed to an eight-month high of 52.1 in January, compared to 49.7 the previous month.

This represented a ten-month peak in output growth as manufacturers enjoyed weakened price inflation.

The survey showed that manufacturers benefited from lower costs for commodities, packaging, paper, metals, plastics and timber.

Chief executive officer at the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply David Noble said: “The UK manufacturing sector has sprung to life in the first month of 2012 to defy any economic gloom, but it is too early to say whether this trend is sustainable.”

For the second consecutive month, foreign demand rose with improved order flows from the Middle East, China, Brazil and the US.

Last month, the Ernst & Young Item Club suggested UK exports were due to increase three per cent in 2012.
